It was a wonderful experience for me and my wife to meet with the congressmen. Most of them were straightforward and would say whether they agree or disagree with you. The need to differentiate our cause and clearly communicate our agenda became very obvious in the meetings. We need to continuously reinforce the points.
IV did an excellent job organizing the meetings and made it so easy for people like us to participate and contribute to the cause.
From my own experience i can say that taking concrete steps reduces the anxiety of uncertainty, whatever maybe the eventual outcome. That in itself is a reason enough to act.
As i said earlier we need to continuously reinforce our points to the congressmen. Those who missed this opportunity to reduce their anxiety would definitely have more opportunities coming their way in the future.

^^^^ A very important day, where the house representation is expected to significantly change affecting the outcome of future bills, especially related to legal and illegal immigration.
Hope the changes today are for the better in general and will also help our situation.
It will be a fallacy to think anything will be done for legal immigrants because Republicans will take over the house. The main intent of that party is to throw Obama out after one term and so for the next 2 years any progressive legislation is highly unlikely (I am not talking about CIR. I think it is a given that CIR is not going anywhere in the near future). But, I am an optimist!
PS - My status is not updated because I am not in the GC queue yet.

We should NOT be surprised that there is no movement in EB2/EB3 Categories given the number of applications filed recently. We may not see any reasonable forward movement for a long time unless congress passes the visa recapture bill.
I don't think the July/August filings will have impact on the retrogression right away. The cut-off dates would retrogress based on number of applications ready for approval/approved pending VISA number. The applications (485) filed in July/August are not processed yet and hence will not impact retrogression today.

I decided to join you as a monthly Donor today.
It looks like your organization is the only one doing anything concrete to help legal immigrants. I had trouble finding support on other immigration sites.
This is request to other members and forum browsers, guests to also support their effort.
The recession has been tough, but if I had to choose, my immigration is more important to me than cable TV.

If someone is responsible for the current state of affairs in the H1B area , It is Indian firms . The H1B1 was started in 'GOOD FAITH ' by United States to help people from "all over the world" to come in and work in the US , but large Indian IT houses have overexploited these loopholes so much that we are currently in this sorry state of affairs . In their greed for higher and higher profits(every Indian firm hits 30% profits every quarter ) they have spoiled a perfectly working program a few years ago to such a state that now getting an H1B has got less nothing to do with talent but has become like buying a supperlotto ticket .Below is a very good article from the "Economic Policy Institute " that highlights the fact that 2 well known Indian firms have single handedly lapped up 65% of H1B visas last year and have applied for just 69 green cards . Thats a GC application rate of 0.0004%. i Cannot help agree with the facts in this article. I totally agree that firms like these which abuse the system ought to be severely punished and blacklisted, so that geniunine US companies can get their required workers , when they need them . Wow! Lots of advices and opinions. Meanwhile the housing slump is expected to continue well into 2010. I remember many people on this board challenging me last year 'how do you know it will go down', despite me posting the supporting data and the trend. It has gone down and will keep going down until it becomes cheap/affordable. Maybe 2000 price levels?
http://uk.reuters.com/article/marketsNewsUS/idUKN2265655120090122?pageNumber=1
Yes, that is what the trend look like. There is probably another 5-10% fall in the works. Perhaps even more. I agree with you on that.
However, the million dollar question is how do you know the prices have actually bottomed one? Won't you go ahead and buy if its affordable, instead of wasting precious years which shorten the career span and deferring your decision? Its almost like deciding when to have your first child...well..almost. There is never really a good time, is there?
By affordable, I mean its around 'x' times your (dual) income, you have your green card and you are prepared to live in the US for next 5 years at least (even if there is any family emergency, you don't have any compulsion to sell off your assets and move to India for good). Now, 'x' may mean different for different people but generally people seem to agree x = 3. And I also agree with you that it might happen that american housing is always affordable. Yes, it might but for most middle class in SFO Bay area, when x was 7-10, it wasn't affordable at all!
I completely oppose folks like Slumdog doing something terribly rash (no gc, no prospect of gc within a year, single income with a baby, baby having some health issues and to top it all the burden of a heavy mortgage on the shoulders, god, I think his situation is simply awful...) but the way I read it is that these indeterminate immigration waits are making people throw caution to the winds.
And I don't agree with folks who feel that buying your house is like renting it out simply because it is mortgaged. There is big difference, eventually its get all paid off and you start actually owning it. Secondly, for a lot of people that they can sell it during their retirement and use the sale proceeds to cover the retirement life. There is very good chance real estate would have appreciated over long term. Of course, you are just interested in 'flipping' you are asking for big trouble.

this whole thread is a nonsense, it belevies that people are not aware of the tricks placed by desi consulting companies. how come people do not take jobs
in foutune 500 companies if they are so good at their skills, why do people go to
desi consulting companies for training, after MS degree every body is asking for
the list of consulting companies( why do they do that ).
there are people who ask is it valid to be without payslips on H1B ( how much
more ignorent can u be ) , bottom line they could not find the project and they want to blame the desi company for not paying them ( trash ).
wake up people.
thanks

i don't get it you are saying that members don't have to search...and yet someone has to keep it up on the home page...which is it? yes a sticky thread would have saved work and not required someone to keep it up. Why wasn't it done in the first place. When a service is supposed to be offered every week...it should be offered every week...or else there should be an announcement that is will not be offered this particular week and that it will continue next on said week.
No reason to be frustrated when people are asking simple questions...another idea would be to put the answers to the most frequently asked questions on the FAQ page...which does not work right now....so that you don't have to repeat the answers.
Its an easy solution i think.
Giving a long lecture of frustration is not the best way to attract people to an organisation.
Think about it...do u go buy clothes from a store that voices their frustrations about the prices of raw material...of do u go buy it because they were nice to you...had great customer service...nice selection of goods...and fair prices.
I am sorry but working for hours on end alone, voicing frustration at lack of participation, treating members like they are morons for not being able to find supposedly simple things is a really terrible way to attract more people to an organisation. The cause may be noble...but who will wanna join some organisation where people just complain about how miserable things are.
Please pause for a moment and think about what i am saying. This is exactly why you have less participation and less donation. IV needs to transform into a vibrant fun place to be while still upholding the noble cause.
This is just unbelievable nitpicking. Completely unproductive.
A "grassroots" organization like IV is what its members come to the table with - making it fun etc. is also dependent on the members - not some specific, designated individuals.

Hi, Did somebody take advantage of the new rule of H1-H4 decoupling where one can use the time spent in H4 in H1? or can somebody confirm that this rule is in place and a law ? Please let me know.
my wife worked for 31/2 years on H1/L1 before changing status to H4. After 4 years on H4, she recently got a job and he H1 was approved in 2 days under premium processing. So the decoupling rule is effective.

He meant that 140k Visa numbers allocated each year, out of which less number Visas are actually processed by CIS, all the unused visa numbers in the past which might be more than 300k should be used now to reduce the backlog.
Totoro,
CIS did not issue all those 140K visas for past sevaral years despite of the fact that there were more than 140K applications pending with them during all those years. Those visa numbers were lost and the applications accumulated over the period of time due to inefficient USCIS process.
This is what ombudsman said about this issue and I quote
"For example, when employment-based visas are not used during the year they are authorized, they are lost and are not available for future use without special legislation. In FY 06, over 10,000 employment-based visas were lost, even though USCIS had an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 pending applications for employment-based green cards.36 Based on USCIS use of visa numbers as of May 2007, at present consumption rates approximately 40,000 visas will be lost in FY 07 without a dramatic increase in USCIS requests of visa numbers.37 As illustrated below, since 1994 there have been over 218,000 un-recaptured employment-based visas lost due to underutilization of the employment-based visas. " end quote.
Here's the link to all the issues raised by ombudsman in 2007 annual report.

u mean the old Passport ? Yes, my old one was issued in India (vizag).
renewal applied by mail to CG SFO, got the new one to my mailing address in US, on the fifth day.
the 10 days estimate they are giving might be including the buffer time for contingencies and
contacting vizag might be the worst case scenario they are telling, but most probably not needed.
i later learned that, u can renew ur PP in India in 3 days, with Tatkal.
