My thoughts are the same, people honestly believe that wwdc is just the keynote

It's the only part I (and a lot of people on this site) really care about. Is that such a big deal?

It's the fourth most behind Mandarin, English, and Hindi.

    http://www.krysstal.com/spoken.html

(just in case you were wondering)
Well there you go, was wondering about Chinese (mainly Mandarin), didn't think of Hindi. So English is only the 2nd most spoken language, huh. Add Spanish and Portuguese, and it would be 2nd! Well OK, not how it works...
So Mandarin, English, Spanish and possibly Hindi dictionaries should be hot sellers on an eBookPod then.

Why is he blaming it on us? Its "ultimate"ly his decision to use and post what information was given to him. He's the one that needs to decipher between good and bad tips. Not to just take anything anyone says as fact and then publish on his website.

Think you're imagining it. Have updated my MB and i still can't hear the fan in normal usage. I expect it will kick in at some time when it decides things are getting a bit hot.

What I don't understand is that i only started getting shutdowns after the upgrade to 10.4.8 and it's associated firmware UG. And it seemed truly random, i.e. shortly after bootup (when the MB was still cool!) or after several hours, which is why I don't understand how a thermally expanding heatsink could be the culprit. If so, then it should always shutdown as the temperature rises to a certain point.

Dunno, just hope this new updater fixes the problem.

Same here.. my MB started shutting down after updating to 10.4.8 (and the fan firmware update I think) It would shut down when I would just start her up.. or, as you mentioned.. after several hours of use. I formatted the drive and reinstalled 10.4.6.. but shutdowns continued. Weird.

steve is right, the basic thing is the ipod works well, and it is very simple to use. Itunes helps everything by being a first class program that is always getting frequent updates.

only thing is, apple needs to let record labels/artists come up with variable pricing.

so catalog albums will cost less, and labels can get money from singles.

"Hardware accessories Apple Remote, 85W MagSafe Power Adapter, AC wall plug, power cord, lithium-polymer battery"

Why does that say 85W? Am i missing something, or is that a mistake? the 85W adapter is for the MBP's.

I'm guessing they did that so they could use the same adapters for both. The laptop itself still has a 60W ps.

Apologies if someone has already posted this but just spotted this in Google News. Please note that many of the prices quoted are either in Canadian or Australian dollars.

PRICING details for Microsoft's forthcoming Vista Windows release are starting to leak out, with both Microsoft's Canadian operation and online retailer Amazon publishing prices online.

Amazon.com is listing pre-order copies of Windows Vista Ultimate for $US399 ($524), saying the product would be released on January 30, 2007.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's Canadian operation has inadvertently leaked prices for the forthcoming Windows Vista release.

According to posts on tech forum site Neowin.net, the Canadian website listed Windows Vista Ultimate for $C499 ($590). The Home Platinum edition was priced at $C299 and the Home Premium Upgrade version at $C199.

The Canadian website currently lists Windows XP Professional for a retail price of $C499. Microsoft Australia lists the same product for $479.

    http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,20291440%5E15321%5E%5Enbv%5E,00.html

If these reports turn out to have any basis in reality, please let's not hear any more complaining about how expensive OSX is.

I tried to implement the Fivepoint solution to the budget deficit and still came up with a deficit of 156 Billion dollars, but I was able to save Social Security (137%)

I cut EVERY even remotely liberal sounding program by 50%, rounding down. So, for example, if EPA's budget was 27, I changed it to 13. If it was a conservative supported idea, I didn't touch it (prisons, immigration, etc...) The only concession I made on that point was to reduce military spending from 601 to 400. As for taxes and social security, I raised NO taxes and only reduced benefits and increased the age of participation in SS.

Based on what I know, I don't think it would be possible to reduce some of the budgets by 50% or more, but I went ahead and did it anyway, and still had a significant budget deficit. I guess military spending could be reduced even more, but I can't imagine Republicans voting for that.

Fiscal responsibility seems to me to be a three part question. First, are you spending more than you take in. Second, will the cuts cause damages that will require additional unbudgeted spending. Third, will any tax increases materially reduce revenue through damage to the economy. Everything else is a matter of priorities, and those are debatable.

When I did the matrix the first time with my priorities, I managed to end up with a modest surplus that could be used to reduce the debt. I think I met the first criteria. I cut some spending, including military, but I tried to not slash any area beyond what seemed an amount that could be sustained without too much damage. All in all, on the spending side, the cuts were modest, and were offset by some increases in spending. Spending cuts alone did not meet the first criteria, but considering the areas that I cut were very inflated compared to our needs, I don't think that the cuts would cause too much in the way of damage. Obviously, some additional costs might be necessary, but probably not more than 10-20 billion, and certainly not more than the surplus I had at the end. Finally, I raised taxes in a progressive fashion, the majority of increases falling on those above $100,000 per year income, with the most increases going to the top two groups. The estate tax also was increased. I'm not a fan of VAT taxes or sin taxes, so I eschewed those. History has shown that increased taxes don't result in major economic decline, and in fact, result in increased economic activity, so I think I met all three criteria. Even if the tax increases cause some damage, is that damage more or less than having large deficits and increasing our debt? I don't think so, but that's probably debatable.

When I tried to anticipate how Rand Paul or his followers would deal with this problem, I had a deficit despite slashing almost every major governmental program. I can't imagine how cutting necessary and relied upon programs by 50% or more would not result in all sorts of problems that will require governmental intervention and spending, not to mention hurt millions of people. The only criteria I "met" was in not increasing taxes, and 30 years of Reaganomics and Bush Voodoo economics may actually be enough proof to say that may not even be the case.

Anyway, that was my attempt to do what Fivepoint suggests, and I failed miserably. I'd like to see how fiscally responsible his proposal would be, and I'd like to see the choices he makes. It's one thing to say you're going to cut a program by 75%, and another to actually do it and then deal with the aftermath.

It would be great if they will introduce a 23" iMac with a built in TV-tuner and a revision of Front Row :)

Great for the dorm room ... but rather pointless for the home theatre.

Bring on the DVD-player sized HTPC pizza-box - two to four tuners, 1.5 TB disk, Conroe....

(Related post in the 23" iMac thread - http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2792129&postcount=664 )

One of the Mac screen savers will do mosaics of photos from a folder... it's kind of cool to watch them zoom out into a mosaic, but can get hypnotic... ;)

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. Humans are social creatures, we evolved being social to help us survive against great odds.

    ...

I'll see if I can find it, but I wouldn't boast about having Asperger's, it's better to boast about being an NT (Myers-Briggs personality type)

I was joking. I don't think we need a society of of Dr. House walking around.

Sad part is, as adoption increases...so will viruses/malware/trojans/etc.

    Best analogy Ive heard is:

Windows 7 is a house with bars on the windows, and industrial locks on the doors...in Baltimore.

OSX is a house with no locks, in the middle of nowhere.

We've been hearing this since 2002 or so.

Where's all the malware? It's 2011 and we have zero viruses and like 2 trojans. Adoption is increasing but malware is not.

    BUT . . . I do like your analogy. :)

Despite all the talk about paper having "superior resolution" to displays, the human eye can't really tell the difference in the size of the dots making up the print past a certain point.

The main reason displays cause eyestrain when trying to read something like a book is the fact that they're backlit. Basically, it's akin to staring into a small flashlight. The much talked-about "e-ink" or "e-paper" is interesting because it would simply work with reflected light from existing sources - just like reading real paper.

If the other "video ipod" rumors are true, Apple is looking at using the new "OLED" display technology for the next iPod. That's not going to be quite as "paper-like" as the "e-ink/e-paper" technologies, but should provide better contrast (and resolution) than LCD technology. So that means it will be better than most devices at reducing eyestrain while reading, but not as easy on the eyes as a real paper book either.

    Yes. Yes it would.

Until display resolution matches paper resolution, the e-book will remain relatively unpopular.

This does seem to make a serious run at the "iPod for Education" crowd, though -- fighting to keep brand loyalty with the kids, I spose ...

I hate car analogies but yeah a $50K Lexus is better than a $20K GM, but for some people it is not and will never be worth 2-3x the cost. Some people don't need or want to pay the premium for a car that can parallel park itself or rear heated seats! ;-) Lexus has a cap on what their marketshare could be no matter how great their product is which was my original point about Apple.

The difference is that a $50K Lexus costs more than forty times more than a 13" MacBook Pro. This discussion was about whether Apple is limited by being "affordable". There are lots of people who _cannot_ buy the Lexus. But everyone who buys the $20K GM can easily buy a 13" MBP which costs just 6 percent of the GM.

Yes, there will always be people who decide to buy a cheaper computer. What I am saying is that there are very few people who _cannot_ buy a Macintosh, as is claimed so often. And those who decide to buy cheap, they should think about how you get the best value for your money: You buy something of quality, without any unneeded luxuries that just waste money, and then you look after it.

The Beatles did the meat thing in 1966. ;)

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/55/The_Beatles_-_Butcher_Cover.jpg/602px-The_Beatles_-_Butcher_Cover.jpg

    The legendary butcher cover.

My brother in law bought the regular cover "Yesterday and Today" album for 25 cents at a garage sale, but underneath the placid regular cover was this gory one.

He then called our friend who owned a local used record shop. The record store owner urged him not to peel off the front image, even though my brother in law was curious as to what may be underneath that wholesome photo of the Beatles. Despite its estimated value at that time (early 90's) being $1,000 dollars, he steamed off the regular cover to reveal the butcher cover and thus dropped the value of the LP by half the amount. The record shop owner was distraught!

The most sought after cover is the censored "safe" one with this gore hiding underneath it. Today a cover like this, with all the blood and gore, would not upset anyone.

We have to raise taxes, and cut our military spending first and foremost. I say cut military before benefits because those benefits are the only thing keeping millions of our people from being third world status poor.

Check out the link I posted. You can actually design the budget yourself, it is pretty neat.

Precisely - see my above post. As I see it, there is still a huge gap in the product line - perhaps not in price or specs, but in fundamental design philosophy. Anyone wanting an Apple desktop is forced to buy an AIO. For many people that's fine, they don't care, perhaps they even welcome it or prefer it, but for many others it's simply not an attractive option.

    Nicely said. I fully agree.
